Dragon 11.5 upgrade and small fix

So I downloaded the 11.5 upgrade for Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

The short part: the backspace bug was fixed, but the dash bug wasn’t. At least I’m pretty sure it wasn’t — it’s hard to tell sometimes. If you don’t want to use Vocola, you can fix that (possible) bug by making a new entry in the Vocabulary Editor. I tried this two ways to make sure: I said “hyphen” twice under Written Form and called that “dash,” then I rolled over the hyphen key on the on-screen keyboard twice and called that “keyboard dash.” (I had deleted all of Dragon’s dash entries before I started.) Both — and — seemed to come out the proper length, so I deleted the “keyboard dash” entry.

I very much like the new “quote that” or “quote selection” command. (Which, by the way, won’t work if you’re dictating directly into a Firefox text field.) Some of the writing I do for work involves heavy citation, and it’s nice not to have to keep saying “begin quote blah blah close quote” out of habit. I like the “empty quotes/brackets” command, too — it quotes or brackets your next utterance for you ahead of time. This will be WONDERFUL for programming, when I get myself together and crack the book again.

The “post to Facebook” command is also very nice, though its login request appears to be tied to Internet Explorer even if your default browser is Firefox. For commands like this, it’s helpful if you have text macros for your logins, provided you have the Premium version. This probably goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway: this command probably won’t work properly if you’re using anything below IE7. I don’t have Twitter, but I imagine that command is also very helpful.

Random fact: the “Compound that” command still doesn’t un-highlight the words you joined after it executes. But then, maybe it wasn’t supposed to? I forget.

Also, something about the Dictation Box. I don’t know if this is new or not, because I’m so used to dictating my blog posts into Jarte and pasting them, but if I tell Dragon to show the box so that I can transfer into a WordPress text field, the Dictation Box keeps showing the URL of my draft, so that I have to constantly delete it every time I bring up the box. But that’s tolerable, I suppose.

Other than that, I don’t think I’ve noticed anything unusual for my purposes. I’ll update if I do.
